Developing multi-objective optimization model with conflicting goals to improve the surge protection devices design for water hammer

In this study, a Multi-objective Optimization Model (MOM) is developed and solved for the optimum design of surge protection devices (including air chamber shock damper) with conflicting goals. The damper new type tank invented by researchers. For first time, parameters as decision variables are raised in MOM problem, results benchmarked solving model well. Method characteristics (MOC) chosen numerical solution water hammer PDE’s its system equations interior boundary nodes used constraints optimization model. criteria functions safety installation cost devices. following using weight coefficients normalized objective obtained dividing each mentioned maximum potential values them, resulting problem Genetic Algorithm (GA). results, while investigated conceptually, show significant improvement multi-objective performance cost-saving better function regarding both criteria.
